Context
Freakyyy Letters began with messages Ted Wang had carried for years but could never send. In Hong Kong, following his father’s sudden bankruptcy, he had to leave behind relationships, unsettled conversations, and unresolved circumstances. Over time, unsent messages accumulated on his phone—paragraphs written in moments of reflection that remained trapped in the Notes app. Through this experience, he realized that the act of writing and articulating thoughts carries emotional value of its own, even when no reply is expected or possible.
Challenge
Most digital communication products are designed with immediate delivery and feedback loops in mind. They assume that every message should reach the recipient instantly and prompt an active, ongoing conversation. However, some words require time to settle, others only make sense after years have passed, and some need to be expressed without provoking an immediate confrontation. The challenge was building a digital space tailored specifically for emotional expression, privacy, and permanence, without relying on typical social media notification metrics, likes, or transactional feedback loops.
The Persona
- Target Persona: Someone carrying words they cannot send.
- Behavioural Motivation: They may want to explain, apologise, remember, or finally express something, but they are not ready to begin an immediate conversation. They need a quieter repository than public social media feeds and a more intentional platform than leaving unsent drafts in a default Notes app.
Freakyyy’s Role
Freakyyy acted as the product strategist, designer, and developer, translating an intimate human experience into a working owned digital product. We defined the concept, mapped user journeys, designed the brand and interface, implemented the underlying storage workflows, and established the moderation backend.
Work delivered & Features
- Public Archive: A secure ledger for letters intended to be open to the wild. If a recipient’s email is provided, they are notified first and granted a 24-hour window to keep the letter permanently private. We respect user privacy and do not read letters during this private window. If the recipient does not claim it, the letter goes to admin approval and is released to the Public Archive.
- Sealed Letters (Time Capsule): Letters locked in a digital vault until a user-specified date in the future. When the countdown reaches zero, the seal breaks and the recipient receives a 24-hour private reading window. The platform prevents administrative access to read sealed letters before the recipient does. Recipients can choose to keep the letter private forever after viewing.
- Sealed Themes: A visual system allowing writers to customize their sealed envelopes. Users can select themes like Default, Love, Future Self, and Apology to color the envelope and match the wax seal.
- Recipient Privacy Controls: Strong design safeguards that put the recipient in control. No letter is published or sent if the recipient requests permanent privacy.
- Permanent Preservation Workflow: After the cancellation and moderation window, approved public letters are archived on Arweave, a decentralized storage network designed for long-term data permanence.
- Optional Minted Relics: While every letter is preserved on the decentralized archive, authors can optionally choose to mint their letter as a unique digital token (NFT), transforming it into a unique digital relic that can be claimed or sent to the recipient’s wallet.
- Brand & Mobile-First Interface: A minimalist interface with high-contrast typography, soft grain patterns, and responsive layouts designed to feel like traditional paper stationery.
- Install-First PWA Architecture: Freakyyy Letters was designed as an install-first Progressive Web App rather than a conventional website. Its browser page is deliberately minimal—more entrance than explanation. The landing page, carrying the intentionally minimal line “Some things are meant to be heard when the time is right”, serves as a simple gateway rather than the complete product experience. The interface and main experience appear only after the PWA is installed and opened from the home screen. We treated installation as part of entering the product: a digital speakeasy, not another website waiting to be browsed. This was a deliberate product and creative decision, not an unfinished landing page.
